Bumble Safety Update

April 2024

UX/UI Case Competition

On Bumble, women make the first move, putting them in control of their experiences and interactions. However, members of Bumble - like members of other dating apps - often have concerns about their safety, whether that's fear of being catfished, scammed, or otherwise.

These concerns often prohibit a transition from the app dinner table, squashing relationships that once had budding potential. How might Bumble help college students feel safe enough to take their digital connections offline?

The problem
User insights & priorities
Key Insights
  •  36% of online daters found their interactions “either extremely or very upsetting”. -BBC

  • 40% of internet users have faced harassment and 73% of users have seen others get harassed.

  • Studies show that about 23% of women and 38% of men have catfished someone. Nearly 40% of all catfishing comes from dating apps.

Female college students interested in making new relationships (romantic, business, frienships) want to do activities and go places accompanied, want to expand business opportunities.

An emergency SOS feature on dating apps like Bumble enhances user safety by allowing them to quickly alert authorities or trusted contacts if they feel unsafe during a date. This immediate lifeline can prevent potential dangers and make the dating experience more secure.

Reflection

This was an incredible experience for me to familiarize myself with the design language of one of the most popular apps in the world. I learned a lot about how to design for a specific user base, and hope to continue working on apps to make the world a safer and more comfortable space for everyone!
